Hunger by Roxane Gay

“I do not know why I turned to food, or I do. I was lonely and scared, and food offered an immediate satisfaction. Food offered comfort when I needed to be comforted, and did not know how to ask for what I needed from those who loved me. Food made me feel good and made me feel better, and was within my reach.”

A deeply sobering, and brutally vulnerable and honest view into an immensely courageous woman’s relationship with her body, and her journey through a deeply unjust, and unfairly judgemental world.

Most striking to me was Gay’s masterful articulation of her trauma – I will never be close to being able to understand what she endured for most of her life, but her story reads so naturally in her voice you can’t help but feel compelled to empathize with all you can.
